Participants learn to use aerial photographs, topographic maps, satellite imagery, and wetland habitat maps.
This two and a half day hands-on course will explore changes in wetlands and habitats of Weedon Island Preserve in Tampa Bay (a guided tour of Weedon Island is included on third day). Participants will be introduced to wetland habitats' functions and values, wetland mapping, digital databases, and GIS technology.

This workshop will promote public awareness and assist with the integration of wetland loss issues using maps and images into existing curricula and provide an understanding of the cause and effect of wetland change. Emphasis is placed on wetland versatility and skill development by combining graphic skills, aerial photographic interpretation, topographic map skills, manual GIS technologies and content knowledge in earth science, geography, environmental science, and biology.

All participants are provided with a binder and packet of materials that include:

  • curriculum supplements
  • educator's supplement with resource guide
  • geographic summary of the site
  • statistical information
  • exercises
  • photographic essay
  • aerial photos
  • topographic maps
  • wetland and upland habitat maps
  • markers, pencils, rulers, magnifying glass, tape, and more

The above resources and additional information can be found on the WETMAAP Website.

Course outline meets state and national curriculum standards for science, math and geography.
