USGS Open House 2005
Geographic Information System (GIS) Booth

Kristina Martella, GIS Specialist, (USGS/???) explains how a GIS works to 4th graders.
The USGS Center for Coastal and Watershed Studies, in St. Petersburg, Florida, held its 7th annual Open House on November 30th and December 1st, 2005.

Kristine Martella, GIS Specialist (IAP World Services, Inc./USGS National Wetlands Research Center), described to groups of 4th graders from local Tampa Bay area elementary schools the basics of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Children viewed aerial photographs and satellite images as examples of where GIS layers derived from.  Each student participated in creating layers that would become part of their own Geographic Information System.

High School students volunteered their help during the Open House.

Divided into groups of three, each student was given a different colored marker, a clipboard with a map and a piece of transparency paper on which to color.

Students with blue markers were in charge of coloring the water on their map, students with black markers colored in the urban or man-made features (roads, buildings, etc.) while wooded areas, including mangroves, were colored with green markers.

When the coloring was complete, the students put all three transparent layers on top of the map to view their finished map product, or Geographic Information System.
