Landsat TM Scene of Tampa Bay, Florida - 1991
|
This overview of Tampa Bay was acquired by satellite, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), on March 22, 1991. The raw image was obtained from the EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and fully processed by the US Geological Survey in St. Petersburg, Florida.
The enhanced satellite image uses Bands 5,4,2 to depict vegetation as green-brown and exposed or developed surfaces as white-purple. It is published for educational purposes as US Geological Survey Open-File Report 01-09 at a scale of 1:110,000. A copy of the image is on display at the Hands-On Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida.
Colors are near natural: Water and swampy areas are blue black. Healthy plant growth is green. Agricultural fields and areas with low plant growth are pink or beige. Highways, parking lots and other black surfaces are purple. Beach sand, cleared land and cement are white or light blue.

These data can used in a Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping and environmental studies in Tampa Bay.
The data were created from the original Landsat image by combining bands 4,5,3, producing a color-infrared image of Tampa Bay. Color-infrared is commonly used in mapping vegetation, determining vegetation health, or conducting environmental pollution studies. Healthy, growing vegetation have high infrared reflectance and appear red in the image. Unhealthy or dormant vegetation may appear light red or a light shade of blue-green. Water absorbs infrared light and appears black, but water with high levels of suspended material may appear more blue.
