| Abstract
Safety Harbor is located in the northwest portion of Old Tampa Bay. A preliminary full spectrum sonar reconnaissance of the bay was carried out to determine sediment character and guide site selection for vibracoring. Interpretations of the seismic data defined at least three continuous reflection horizons within the data.
Cores taken within the harbor were correlated to the data and reflectors were identified. The majority of reflections correlate to grain size transitions within the core. However, not all reflections tie to distinct boundaries within the cores highlighting the complex set of variables that produce a seismic response. Preliminary data indicates grain size is responsible, but porosity and gases within organic-rich units may also be significant.
